How to read a natal chart, in order
You've got a natal chart in front of you — what do you look at first, and what comes later? Work through it in the order "big three → planets in houses → signs → aspects," and even a beginner won't be overwhelmed by a sky full of symbols. Here are the steps we suggest.
The suggested reading order
-
Start with the big three: Sun, Moon, Rising
The Sun is the core self, the Moon the inner emotional life, and the Rising the outward image. The sign combination of these three is the main theme of the chart — grasp it first.
-
Next, see which house each planet falls in
The ten planets each land in one of the twelve houses, tied to career, relationships, home, and more. See which houses they cluster in to find where the energy concentrates.
-
Then see which sign each planet is in
The same planet expresses differently in different signs; the house says "which area," the sign says "in what manner" — read them together.
-
Finally, read aspects as the supporting layer
The angles between planets describe how energies interact. Aspects are a supplement, not the lead — save them for last so you don't miss the forest for the trees.
Common beginner mistakes
- Drawing conclusions from a single placement — a chart must be read as a whole, never judged on one planet in one sign.
- Ignoring the rising sign — the Ascendant sets the entire house layout, is sensitive to birth time, and can't be skipped.
- Treating aspects as good or bad luck — aspects describe energy relationships; there's no absolute good or bad, only how you use them.
